CORE COMPETENCIES

Back to Glossary

Definition

A firm’s unique capabilities that create competitive advantage and are difficult for rivals to imitate.

Summary

Core competencies are the special skills, knowledge, or capabilities that make a company stand out from its competitors. Think of them as a company's 'superpowers' - things they do exceptionally well that are hard for other companies to copy. These competencies must meet three key criteria: they should be valuable to customers, rare among competitors, and difficult to imitate. Core competencies often span across multiple products or services and form the foundation of a company's competitive strategy.

Usage Context

Understanding core competencies is crucial when analyzing company strategy, making outsourcing decisions, evaluating competitive positioning, and understanding how companies build sustainable competitive advantages in their markets.

Common Confusions

  • Thinking that any skill a company has is a core competency
  • Believing core competencies must be technology-related
  • Assuming core competencies are permanent and unchangeable
