BOTTLENECK
Back to GlossaryDefinition
A point of congestion that limits throughput in a process or system.
Summary
A bottleneck is the slowest or most constrained part of a process or system that determines the overall speed or capacity. Like a narrow neck of a bottle that limits how fast liquid can flow out, a bottleneck in any system creates a backup and prevents the entire process from operating at maximum efficiency. The bottleneck is always the limiting factor - even if you improve other parts of the system, the overall performance won't increase until you address the bottleneck itself.
Usage Context
Understanding bottlenecks is crucial for system optimization, process improvement, resource planning, and performance analysis in operations management, computer systems, manufacturing, and project management contexts.
Common Confusions
- Thinking that improving non-bottleneck areas will increase overall system performance
- Confusing bottlenecks with temporary delays or interruptions
- Believing that the physically smallest or slowest component is always the bottleneck
- Not recognizing that bottlenecks can shift when systems change
